The Alameda County Library Foundation was formed in 1996 by a group of civic-minded community leaders to provide supplemental financial support for the Alameda County Library in a time of decreasing public funding. Individuals and numerous businesses, foundations, and organizations sustain the work of the foundation through financial contributions and active involvement in its activities.

Since its inception the foundation has donated over $3 million to the Alameda County Library and has helped make dozens of programs and activities possible throughout the East Bay, all designed to bring the mind-expanding and life-changing power of the library to all corners and peoples of our diverse community. The foundation has a large advisory board in addition to its board of directors.
